For ‘Spirit Fall’ – as well as for ‘Live in Italy’ – Patitucci has the exceptional privilege of having recruited modern day luminaries in Brian Blade and Chris Potter to form part of his outstanding trio. The relationship between all three musicians actually goes back many years with Patitucci and Blade serving as long-standing members of Wayne Shorter’s quartet, and also collaborating together on numerous projects alongside Chris Potter as well dating all the way back to Patitucci’s late 90s/early 2000s stint on Concord Records. As leader of the Brian Blade Fellowship, Blade has also demonstrated immense versatility throughout his career. Whether it be via the evolving Fellowship ensemble or via work with Norah Jones or his side project Black Dub (which sadly only released one album to date), Blade has proved to demonstrate an incredible imagination for his music, as has Chris Potter. As a fellow Edition Records label mate, Potter can showcase a good chunk of his near-thirty album releases as a band leader having found a home on Edition.
The music throughout ‘Spirit Fall’ is a real testament to Patitucci, Blade and Potter – three musicians with distinctive attitudes and perceptions of contemporary jazz that have come together to create an exquisite record bolstered by songs like the rousing ‘Spirit Fall’ title track, the affectionately abrasive ‘Think Fast’, the spirited ‘Sonrisa’ and the sublime centrepiece ‘House of Jade’. A genuinely sensational outing for John Patitucci and hopefully the first of what will become a blossoming relationship with Edition.

John Patitucci’s new partnership with Edition Records represents a fantastic new chapter for each of them. Patitucci’s arrival to the UK-based record label is actually heralded by the release of two albums, ‘Spirit Fall’, along with a live project aptly named ‘Live in Italy’, with the latter a performance dating back to the summer of 2021 and recorded in the picturesque city of Genova. Both releases form a real treat as much of Patitucci’s music always is. A revered and iconic bassist and composer, the New Yorker can cite releases as a frontman and band leader dating back to the late-1980s with an overwhelming number of projects that would consistently follow, along with the prestige of having toured around the world and having scored some world class collaborations with a litany of jazz greats including Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. Much like Hancock and Corea, Patitucci’s musical perspectives have also been noted for their progressive stances on jazz fusion – always open to contemporary styles while still continuing the legacy of his own heroes of the genre like double bassists Ron Carter and Ray Brown. For ‘Spirit Fall’ – as well as for ‘Live in Italy’ – Patitucci has the exceptional privilege of having recruited modern day luminaries in Brian Blade and Chris Potter to form part of his outstanding trio.
